Worldwide, antibacterial resistance has increased dramatically over the past few years and is currently recognised as a major medical challenge in most healthcare settings. Novel antibiotics with activity against important multidrug-resistant bacteria are not on the horizon and physicians resort to old and “forgotten” antibacterial drugs with retained activity. As these old antibiotics have never been characterized in a structured process for drug assessment and approval, vital issues such as choosing the appropriate dosage regimen are still controversial.
